Ah, secrets. Everyone has a secret, right? Well, everyone in this film has a secert to, and that probably revolves around who they're really working for.
We have a kid from the streets who decides to become a cop. He goes through the training, but instead of being assigned, he is ridiculed and given a completely different assignment "more suited to his talents." He's thrown in prison for a year, and then to serve as a mole in an organized crime group. We have another kid who does the same thing, but he was raised by the leader of this mob to go through police training and serve as a mole on the inside of the police. Of course, his record is kept squeaky clean, so they don't notice. Neither of these men knows about the other, yet they have more in common than they could possibly imagine...and they also long to find out who the other one is. After all, the mob insider knows there's a mole in the police force, so he needs to find out who that is. Likewise, the cop insider knows there's a mole in the mob, so he needs to find out who that is. Here's a bigger kicker...they aren't the only ones holding little secrets.
Is it confusing? Are you thrown off? Don't be. this film takes its time explaining every little detail to make sure everything makes sense. You do have to pay attention in this one to get what's going on, and to know who everyone is and who they are really working for. It's one of those films that lies heavily on its development of the characters to really defines the movie, so telling much about it will only defeat and spoil many points of the movie.
It's a great film and it's Oscar was well-deserved. I was not satisfied with the ending and felt more could have been done with a particular setup involving an envelope. I also felt the final scene was terribly cheap and didn't do justice to everything we'd built up. These things aside, it worked very well and was very enaging throughout.
