The Holiday -- 2006 -- PG-13

The previews on this one looked intriguing and being billed as a romantic flick almost guaranteed my wife was going to get it. So being the good husband I am (and secretly wanting to see it myself), I gave it a viewing and was pleasantly surprised to find a film with some complex characters, some realistic situations, and an overall decent plot.

The basics go like this: you have two women -- one in L.A. and one in England -- who are having man troubles. They each want to get away from it all and when the L.A. one discovers the England one's on a home exchange website, they switch houses for two weeks to get away from their worlds. Once done, we end up with the story of four people as opposed to two, each with their own troubles in the world of relationships. As the tale of each unfolds before us, it becomes more and more touching for all involved and while it can't be said that the ending was unpredictable, the journey getting there was ripe with surprises.

Overall, I don't have a lot of complaints on this one. I can nitpick it to death with a handful of cliches, but it was actually a really good film. Stories should be about the characters and this one exemplified this without resorting to a lot of contrived spectacle to tell the story. It boils down to simply the two women going to opposite sides of the world to tackle their demons and finding what their lives were ultimately missing.

It's good for a chick flick, and definitely worth a viewing should you have some extended time to do so.
