Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow -- 2004 -- PG

Here's one I've been meaning to see for a while now just because the previews looked cool. It looks very stylistic, but at the same time, very CG-ish. I knew this before some of the gag reels and deleted scenes showed off just how much there was.

The film feels like an old time film about a guy named Joe (aka Sky Captain) who has a reporter girlfriend, had a fling with another woman while they were together, etc. A band of robots attacks a city and steals some generators. This brings Sky Captain in and between him, his reporter girl, and his buddies, they work to track down not only where these bots come from but how a group of missing scientists factors into it.

The best part of this movie was the look. Using costumes, sets, and their CG, the film had a old time sepia look throughout which created an old movie effect in a crisp little package. It worked very well for the story they were telling.

As for the story, it's very plain and almost cliche in not only what goes on, but the characters involved as well. One of the more annoying points (though not a nuisance character-wise) was the super-bright character who works with the hero to give him all the answers. Once they find the scientists, this characters fills in all the missing exposition so we know everything about everything that's going on except to see the bad guy in person, and of course, our genius knows where he is too. Basically, all our hero and reporter need to do is show up and then save the day at the end.

While some of the ideas were original when placing them in a 1940's setting, there's nothing new here at all. It's an original story, sure, but the situations and character types all feel like retreads.

So if you're looking for some lightweight fun and a cool old-timish feel, then this one provides an easy viewing experience with a simple plot and simple cfharacters.
